Magnetic Interaction in Insulating Cuprates
We examine two-spin (2S) and cyclic four-spin (4S) magnetic interactions in insulating ladder and two-dimensional (2D) cuprates. By a comparison of eigenstates between d-p and Heisenberg models, we evaluate magnitudes of these interactions. We find that the 4S interaction is ∼10 % of nearest neighboring 2S interaction, and a diagonal 2S interaction is considerably small. The 4S interaction for ...
متن کاملTheory of anisotropic superexchange in insulating cuprates.
Spin-orbit corrections to superexchange are calculated using the method of Moriya [T. Moriya, Phys. Rev. 120 91, (1960)] for two of the insulating parent compounds of the cuprate superconductors: (1) La2−xNdxCuO4 where the CuO6 octahedra forming each Cu-O layer are tilted in staggered fashion about an axis which depends on x and temperature; and (2) YBa2Cu3O6+x (x ∼ 0.4) where the Cu-O layers f...
متن کاملCharge Stripes and Antiferromagnetism in Insulating Nickelates and Superconducting Cuprates
Neutron and X-ray scattering studies have provided strong evidence for coupled spatial modulations of charge and spin densities in layered nickelates and cuprates. The accumulated results for La2−xSrxNiO4+δ are consistent with the strongly-modulated topological-stripe concept. Clues from Nd-doped La2−xSrxCuO4 suggest similar behavior for the cuprates. The experimental results are summarized, an...
متن کاملHigh-temperature interface superconductivity between metallic and insulating cuprates
High-temperature superconductivity confined to nanometer-size interfaces has been a long standing goal because of potential applications 1,2 and the opportunity to study quantum phenomena in reduced dimensions 3,4. However, this is a challenging target: in conventional metals the high electron density restricts interface effects such as carrier depletion/accumulation to a region much narrower t...

We study the electronic excitations near the charge-transfer gap in insulating CuO 2 planes, starting from a six-band model which includes p π and d xy orbitals and Cu-O nearest-neighbor repulsion U pd. While the low lying electronic excitations in the doped system are well described by a modified t−J model, the excitonic states of the insulator include hybrid d xy − p π states of A 2g symmetry...
